The refrigerant R600a gas is a natural refrigerant, an isomeric form of unbranched butane, suitable for many cooling applications.
It is environmentally friendly and effective and, in refrigeration applications, offers low energy consumption and load power. It is also compatible with many lubricants. R600a gas is commonly used for its low environmental impact and good thermodynamic performance.
R600a gas applications and use
It is suitable for a variety of industrial, commercial and domestic applications. Isobutane is particularly well known as a refrigerant used in domestic refrigerators and freezers.
The compound is also known from aerosol sprays, the petrochemical industry, beverage dispensers and dehumidifiers. The food additive E number for isobutane is E 943b. In food products, isobutane is used as a packaging gas and propellant, for example.
Isobutane is an isomer of butane (method = isomerisation), which means that it shares the same chemical composition as butane but with a different arrangement of atoms. As with butane, isobutane is a flammable hydrocarbon gas that is liquefied by pressurisation.
Isobutane is mainly used by refineries to produce petrol.
